Let's try this again shall we?

I have started and stopped this blog so many times I can't even count.  I can't even say it's because I'm so popular and extremely busy that I just can't find the time.  Truth is that I am honestly so scatter brained that I simply forget it's even here.  Did I mention I have the link in the #1 spot on my Chrome task bar?  I am in a sense "self-diagnosed" as ADHD!  I have over the years been so envious of people who seem to have their lives in order.  I wish I knew where have my stuff was or belonged.  I have started so many at home businesses it has become a running joke between my husband and myself.

Well, I can say that I have found something that helps a smidgen.  Google has a calendar that you can color code!  Seriously...you would have thought a rainbow died on my screen on most days.

I actually really love it.  Every family member has their own color.  I can even change these colors if I ever need to.  My daughter wanted hot pink and that wasn't in the standard color list.  I can plan meals ahead of time which makes grocery shopping easier too.  I just pull the calendar up on my phone and scroll through the weekly menu.  That way there is rarely unexpected missing ingredients anymore.  I have recently started using the daily reminders too.  I even have a reminder to water my plants that are outside.  I have that classic "out of sight, out of mind" issue.  I have recently added taking my daily vitamins on there too.  This one is a bit easier for me to remember most days, but having several reminders checked off makes me feel good at the end of the day.

I would love to be able to have the pretty organizers that I can carry around in my purse.  Lord knows I have a few hundred posted on pinterest!  You can print the Google calendar out in several sizes.  It's just that my days seem to change so much that it would be a lot of paper and ink to go through.

Needless to say I think I will be adding blog updates on my reminders list too.  Maybe that will help me make more than one or two entries a year...LOL

ARG!

I am at my wits end...or close to it...on how I can bring more money into the house.  Poor hubby is getting pretty stressed out on how to juggle bills, groceries, and still having fun.  We have had an Amway business for a few years, but we can't seem to get anyone to buy anything.  My dad buys his Fruit & Veggie pills at a huge discount through us.  I love him and his help, but that isn't enough to really even qualify for a paycheck.  I have posted discounted prices on Facebook...I have tried to stir an interest in signing up under us on Facebook...I'm kinda at a lose of what else to do to try and drum up extra sales.

I haven't talked to the hubby about it yet, but I am toying around with the idea of becoming a Thirty One consultant.  I still have to figure out how to raise the $100 start up fee, but I rarely see any of them around.  My MIL is sweet and we were thinking of going in on a candle business.  She knows a rep that is getting out of the business and was willing to pass us on some of her customers and a bit of her supplies.  But when I did some easy research I found that there were a ton of reps in my church.  I would just be one small fish among all the others in a small pond.

Anyone ever had luck on LinkedIn?  I even recently updated that with my new graduation info and stuff to try and find some interested businesses out there.  I have actually seen an increase in traffic to my profile, but no bites of interest yet.

I have my small craft business, but since in mostly consists of beanies and scarves...it's really only a seasonal income for me.  And a small income at that!  I can say that the time off has given me time to get my yearly donations done early.  This year I will be giving away 6 dozen hats to Operation Christmas Child.  I was only to donate about a dozen last year.

I will stick to my crazy coupon collection to try and save money for now.  But, I need to make more than I spend...LOL

Raising a growing family on a tight Budget?!

Raising more than two kids is still financially possible. Yes, it does take money to provide for children, but the majority of Americans can provide for several children. I know. You're snickering right now. For the past few years parents have been bombarded with newscasts and articles about the difficult economic times America is facing. But, hear me out.

Many parents have yet to tap into money-saving options when it comes to children. Too many parents focus on giving their kids “only the best.” However, sometimes kids can have the best–at a fraction of the cost.

Have you considered money-saving strategies that many large families use to provide for their six, eight and twelve kids? You may only have a fraction of that in your brood, but you can still make it happen—even on a tight budget!

·         Thrift it! I have seen women literally sour their face when I mention a thrift store or yard-sale. Not me! I LOVE finding a good deal! I have gotten many brand-new items that must have been extra or unwanted gifts at the local thrift store or neighborhood yard sale. Baby clothes are always easy to find since little ones grow out of their layettes at top notch speed. I have snagged Nike, Adidas and Sketchers toddler shoes for my kiddos. There are treasures to be found, so get to treasure-hunting!

·         Make it from scratch. Those multi-flavored Popsicles look yummy, don’t they? Why not try making them at home? Since we live in a tropical climate, my kiddos enjoy chugging down shakes. They like peanut butter shakes, chocolate shakes, vanilla shakes, banana shakes, mango shakes, Oreo shakes and the list goes on. If I buy them at a coffee shop close by it is $2.00 per kid. At home, I make the shakes for $1.50-$3.00—for all five of us! That’s only because Mommy and Daddy have a hard time saying no to a cold, slushy drink topped with whipped cream.

I recently discovered I could make hot cocoa from scratch–with little effort. My family has been hooked ever since. I really just throw some unsweetened cocoa powder, sugar and a dash of salt into a large pot. Then I add water and bring it to a boil. Once it has boiled, I remove from heat and add milk. It is creamy and rich! You can always add extra flavors like caramel, mint and raspberry to make the perfect cup of hot cocoa.

Do some researching today and start making your own food from scratch! Kick the canned, packaged foods and frozen foods. Save money and make healthier, tastier meals.

·         Teach healthy habits. If you are blessed to stay at home with your kiddos, you have an opportunity everyday to make sure they are consuming healthy foods, washing their hands, brushing their teeth etc. Taking time to ensure your kids are staying healthy will prevent many health problems that can rack havoc on your bank account—health insurance or not. Just making the choice to home-school can cut down on millions of germs your kids are exposed to. Also, taking precautions when returning from public places, like washing hands right away, will cut down on the doctor bills and meds. Don’t forget to teach your kids to stop touching their face! Small steps make a big difference.

·         Treat items with care. A real money-stretcher is a simple thought—take care of the things you already have! Things need replaced less often if handled with care and maintained well. Don’t allow your kids to jump on your furniture, write on the walls or throw objects. Give the family dog a chew toy and train it to avoid chewing on your shoes and toys. Take time to show your kids how to care for books, DVDs and toys.

·         “Just a dab will do ya!” This is a famous saying from my Grandma–and boy, is it a wise one. Do your kids really need a tablespoon of toothpaste to brush their teeth? What about shampoo and soap? For sure they don’t need a huge glob of shampoo slathered onto their tiny tresses! It’s amazing how much money my family has saved just by monitoring the amounts of toiletries, food and drinks our kids use. Take a couple days and observe if your family is using excessive amounts of toiletries or other items—it may surprise you!

·         Divvy out small portions. After I prepare dinner, I prepare my husband’s plate and then my kids. I probably give each child about two tablespoons of the side veggie and then two tablespoons of the main dish. If the kids want more, then I give them more. But what happens if I give them a teen-sized portion and then there is uneaten, left-over food? It goes in the trash. Serving smaller portions to your kids will, in time, cut your grocery bill at least by 20%.

One of those days!

I know we all have them...some worse than others.  One of those days when you get the feeling that you just aren't doing enough.  Either helping out financially in your household or just helping out in your church or community.  I know my friends and family would laugh and take my temperature since I seem to actually have very little time to even call my own.  Whether it's Girl Scouts, Cub Scouts, my online college classes, the kids online home school classes, or helping my dad with his Friday night Bible study supplies.  Did I mention I still do all the household stuff like cooking, cleaning, and laundry too?

I try so hard to be organized or get more organized.  I am a total Pinterest junkie with tons of pins on the subject.  Did I also mention that it sometimes takes a lot of money to try those ideas?  It's totally amazing to see the things other people have come up with to try and make things a bit easier on themselves.  Some of those things I never would have thought of...not even in a million years.

Like using a plastic over the door organizer to store Barbies...

...or how about using hanging file folders to store fabric remnants...

...heck, they even have places to print the labels you need to organize the stuff...

...and if those don't work they have whole pins to help you with tons of other ideas!

I can see how people get depressed when you look at "pins" like these and feel like your home isn't up to par.  But then I have to also think about who's par I want to live up to.  My house is a very busy place with a teenager, two children under 10, and two adults.  There are few days when we are not home to mess things up.  Our house tends to stay on the "lived in" side of the clean scale.  There may be hangers on the floor or a crayon or two under the table, but you know what...I'll live with that if that's what I complain about.  There are people out there with no clothes to need a hanger and children out there who don't have one crayon much less a box with a few hundred in it.

I guess writing all this out helped get me out of my own crumby mood.  I'm going to go hugs my kids, pick up those hangers, and maybe relax for a few minutes and have a cup of coffee.  Don't get me started on my love of coffee.  I even have my own Pinterest board dedicated to my own guilty pleasure of coffee.

My hubby knows where he is on my scale...and he's ok with it!  hehe

Home school is a go!

We started home schooling Alex and Samie a few weeks ago.  he are both registered through Florida virtual School.  This mean they are still Florida students, but the home educated students at the same time.  They both got huge boxes of books and workbooks.  They even got paint brushes and safety goggles to use too.  Samie loves the yoga CD she got and has even done it a few times already.

Oh...I am also exited to be getting into my couponing again!  I went on a big trip last Friday and saved $84.  I had to do two transactions in order to use my two $5 coupons.  So I spent $130 instead of over $200.

Plus, a huge perk for shopping at Winn Dixie is their Fuel Perks program.  This is a way to earn money off at the gas pump by just shopping and buying groceries.  I have gotten as much as $1.50 off PER gallon of gas before.  This was back when gas was over $4 a gallon so it was awesome to get it back under $3!  It is usually about $.05 per $50 you spend, but they have bonus items that give you money on top of your added up amount.  Did I mention tthat the $50 is added up over the month.  So if you spend $25 today an $25 tomorrow...there's $50 and your first $.05 off.  It's that easy and when everything is expensive...even $.05 off is a big deal.

Well I better get going on my own school work.  I can't wait until May 2014....NO SCHOOL FOR ME!

Our new Adventure...

...most of you know that I have pretty much been a college student since July 2009.  Did you guys know that Mike went back to school a few years ago?  We both will graduate with BS degrees next year, Me in May and him just a few months later.  So to take notes...Mike and I = Full time students.  Bonus points for Mike = he also works full time outside the house as a manager for Staples.  Not so "easy"!  AND now...we decided to homeschool both Alex and Samie.  They are actually going through FLVS and listed as full time home educated children.  It was really easy to get them signed up and they even got all their text books mailed to them and even a few art supplies for "Art Class".  I had them doing workbooks and stuff all summer so they would get to know what's it was like working at home.  It's still a battle to get them to sit at the computer and do their work, but it's only week 2 and we're still trying to get into a groove with it.

Mike and I are geeks...we know it...you know it...end of story.  I was goofing off one night on youtube and found the best channel EVER!  It's tabletop which is produced by the King of geeks Mr. Wil Wheaten and the Queen of geeks Ms. Felicia Day.  It is freaking awesome and so funny.  They basically play board games and video themselves and friends doing it.  But these just aren't any board games...no.  These are games probably no one has ever heard of.  We have even thought about looking some of them up online to get and play at home.

Anyway...lunch break for us school students.  Take care and leave a comment if you want.

The next 8 simple steps to saving money with coupons!!

1. Determine which stores are in your area to shop at.
Here in SW Florida, the main grocery stores are Publix, Sweetbay and Winn-Dixie. I have a couponing friend in upstate New York who swears by PriceChopper. There are SuperTarget & Super WalMart stores almost everywhere.  The thing to remember with coupon shopping is that the stores that have the lowest overall prices don’t usually have the best “loss leader” sales. They rely on their everyday low prices to entice shoppers.

The opposite is true of the stores with higher prices. They rely on their sales to entice shoppers, knowing that the vast majority will end up buying plenty of non-sale items as well.

Part of the trick to using coupons effectively is to beat the system by a.) stockpiling and b.) shopping at multiple stores.

2. Pick a coupon shopping website to help you make your list.

There are some amazing coupon resources available on the Internet, and you will save yourself a lot of time and frustration by using them.

Here are my recommended coupon match up sites:
True Couponing - I use and love this site.  It matches up just about every store in the area with coupons and flyer's.  They can even give you ideas of what to buy and what coupons to use to save the most on your trip.
Southern Savers–great match ups for Southern grocery stores
One Deal at a Time--Really great Kroger & Randall’s lists (based out of Texas)
Surviving the Stores–huge selection; based out of Texas
Coupon Connections–great match ups for the Pacific Northwest
Living Rich with Coupons–Focuses on the Northeastern United States; awesome Shoprite match up
Cuckoo for Coupon Deals–huge selection; really great Kmart match up
Happy Homemaker Cindy–based out of Michigan; great Meijer match up
Nor Cal Coupon Gal-Northern California
Southern Cali Saver-Southern California
Penny Pinchin’-- Mom-Midwest

These are only a few of the many, many coupon match up blogs available. If you are looking for a particular store, just do a google search for “[your store] coupon matchups” and you should be able to find something.  Once you figure out which of these websites matches the stores in your area, bookmark it and then spend some time exploring the site to see where everything is.

3. Find this week’s post for your stores.
Once you’ve decided on your site, click on this week’s ad for the store you would like to shop at.
Read through it completely. Make some mental notes:  Check the final price after coupons. Are there any items that look like a great deal? Are there any items that you or your family want/or need? Which items require coupons from newspaper inserts? Which ones match up with printable coupons? Are there links to those printable coupons? Repeat this exercise for one more store in your area. Which store has better deals this week? Which store has more items you would want to purchase?

4. Make your list.

Based on the exercise you just did, pick ONE of your two stores to make a list from. For the sake of this exercise, pick NO MORE than 3 items. Remember, this is the non- overwhelming baby-steps method of learning how to use coupons!
At some point you will easily head to the grocery store with a list of 30 items and 50 coupons in your hand. But for now, let’s take it slow. Trust me, you will thank me when you get to the checkout line!
If you are using a site with a printable list option (all the ones listed above have this) simply click on the 3 items that you choose and then print your list. If you are writing out your list by hand, be sure to include the exact brand and size of the item, the sale price, and the coupon you will be using.
Finally, choose items that fit ALL of the following criteria:  After coupons, it is more than a 60% savings off the regular price? (For example, if Hamburger Helper is normally $1.99 a box, and they are on sale for Buy 1, Get 1 Free, that will make them 50% off. That’s not good enough. However, if there is also a $1 off 2 boxes coupon available, your final price will be $0.50 a box, a savings of 75%. That is good enough to make the list!)

5. The coupon required for the savings is a printable coupon that is still available.

(To find out if the printable coupon is still available just click the link and try to print. If you get a message that says “no more prints available” or “you have already printed this coupon the max amount of times,” there are no prints left.)

6. The item is something you or your family would use.

(It doesn’t have to be something you always buy, just something that you might like to try or something that you think your family might like if they tried it. Part of the fun of coupon shopping is that you get to expand your horizons and try new things!)

7. Gather your coupons.

Using the links provided on the site you are using, print as many coupons as allowed. (Usually 2 per computer.) If the coupon happens to be a PDF file (rare, but it does happen occasionally), it is helpful to save the coupon on your computer rather than print immediately to use again at a future date.
If you have more than one computer, use it to print additional copies of your coupons. Once you have printed (then trimmed) all the coupons for the 3 items on your list, determine how many of each item you will be able to buy. Remember, if an item is on sale for Buy 1, Get 1 Free, you will be able to use 2 coupons, one for the paid item and one for the free item.  On your list, note how many of each item you will buy based on how many coupons you have.

8. Go shopping!

Isn’t this exciting? Your first trip to the store. Be sure to buy ONLY what is on your list. (Make a separate trip for other items–the goal is to focus and learn without getting overwhelmed or distracted.)
Before you get to the checkout, double check your coupons to make sure the quantities are correct. When you get to the checkout line, be sure to tell the cashier that you have several coupons, and ask whether he/she would prefer them ahead of time or with the items.
Be friendly and courteous and confident, and pay close attention to the coupons as they are scanned to make sure that none get skipped or forgotten (easier to do when you are only purchasing a few items.) I promise any apprehension you may feel will disappear the moment you see your receipt!
And that’s it for this week. Just to review: Decide which stores are available in your area, go to a coupon match up site to help you make your list, then review the weekly ad posts for your top 2 stores. Pick one store and choose no more than 3 items to put on your list, based on the criteria above.
Once you’ve gathered your coupons, head to the store for your first extreme couponing adventure. Once again, it might not seem like much, and after your first trip to the store, you might be eager to grab some more bargains. If so feel free to repeat the list-making process for another store (or even the same store), but be sure to keep your list down to only a few items.

Couponing Guide

Another way I have learned to save money is couponing.  No, I don't spend hours and hours a day searching the interent and printing ton of coupons.  No, I don't have some crazy spreadsheet and store layouts.  I am just an average mom who needs to save money on my grocery budget.  These are a few ideas I thought I'd pass along to you to try and help you save too!

1. Establish your coupon sources.

There are 2 main sources of coupons: newspaper inserts and printable coupons. (There are also a few secondary sources of coupons, such as free coupon booklets (often found at the front of grocery stores or in the mail), store flyers, “peelies,” (coupons stuck to the product you are buying), and coupons that come inside a product.)  It used to be that most coupons came from the Sunday paper, but that is no longer the case. It's estimated that these days at least 80% of the coupons people use each week are now printable coupons. However, the Sunday paper is also an important source of coupons.  This week you should find out which of your local paper’s has the best coupon inserts. The easiest way to do this, if there is more than one option in your area, is buy one of each and then compare. For example, in my area, there are 3 different papers for me to choose from. Of those 3, two get all the coupon inserts each week and one doesn’t. Thus, I only buy the papers that include all the coupons.  For printable coupons, the main sources are Coupons.com, Coupon Network, Red Plum, and Smart Source. There are also coupons available quite often on company websites and Facebook pages. You will generally only print coupons when you need them. Most printable coupons have a limit of 2 per computer, so it helps to have more than one computer.

2. Start a subscription to the Sunday paper.

(Or figure out where you will get your paper from each week.) It may seem weird at first, but to save a lot of money with coupons you will probably want to get multiple copies of the same paper. I never get less than 4 in a given week, and sometimes I even get 6 or more if there is a coupon I really like.  Try asking friends, family, neighbors, or local businesses for their unused inserts. Some areas even have free local papers that include coupon inserts. BE SURE to subscribe to or buy the local paper that has the best coupons. Not all Sunday papers are equal!!

3. Consider buying a cheap B&W laser printer.

You will be printing a LOT of coupons, so I can’t recommend this option strongly enough. An inexpensive laser printer can literally save you hundreds of dollars over the course of a year.

4. Get organized.

Your system need not be elaborate; on the contrary, the simpler it is, the easier it will be to maintain. (And trust me, it will need regular maintenance!)  Ultimately you need to figure out what works for you when it comes to organizing your coupons, but there are a two main options, each with its own pros and cons:

The Filing Method:

The filing system is probably the easiest to set and requires the least amount of time and effort to maintain. However, it will take you longer to plan your shopping trips each week, and you will always have to plan your trip before going to the store.

The filing system is two-fold. For my weekly newspaper inserts, I use a portable file box with hanging folders. Each folder is labeled with the date, and then each Sunday I just plop the whole stack of inserts in the folder. It’s easy-peasy and requires no clipping. (I also have a folder labeled “to sort,” which is handy for keeping track of coupons I’ve printed or clipped but then not used but haven’t yet had time to put away.)

The Binder Method (the method I personally use)

The binder method takes a little more time to set up and maintain each week, but planning and gathering your coupons for a shopping trip is much faster. Coupons are organized by category instead of date and it is portable, which means you can take all your coupons with you each time you go to the store.

I've heard of the Qubie Coupon Organization System, which includes the QubiePro Binder for all your grocery coupons, as well as two smaller binders for specialty store coupons and store cards & gift cards. It arrives ready-to-fill, with plenty of clear 9-pocket “baseball card” sheets and pre-divided into sections.  I just use a zippered 3″ heavy duty binder, A-Z 3-ring binder dividers, and baseball card pages.  I use the "brand" as a way of organization.  Hienz Ketchup would be placed under H.  Charmin Toliet Paper would be placed under C and so on.

Almost "Normal"

On the brink of New Year's Eve our house is barely slowed down. There are still boxes to be packed away and our little tree looks so sad with all it's ornaments already packed away for next year. This was a crafty year for me. I made most of the gifts we gave away and of course made some to keep at home too. I made Scrabble Tile name plates for most of my friends that have children. I thought they were too cute not to share with them.

These were really fun to make.  It was also a joke to see who had the highest point value in their name.  Of course my name was the smallest value.  If we had used full names for Alex and Samie I think they would had won the value.

I also made glass ornaments.  I made the cutest little Santa belts with paper swirls and a snowy type scene one.  I tried to give everyone at least one of each.  I made a tone and ended up with a few of each left over.  Maybe next year if we get a bigger tree and I can at least have a pair of each on the tree.

This is a picture of the first set I made.  The second set I made the black belt a little wider so it was more obvious that it was a belt and not just a black stripe.  I topped it off with a pretty little silvery and white bow.

I have already been looking at some wooden ornaments for next year.  I'll have to keep you guys up to date on the progress of those.  It's not like I don't have time to do them before next Christmas.  I have a link for them if you want to check them out.  I copied it from google docs https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B3EpnW9erHBoVFJfZHFyS25rU2s/edit so I hope this works.

Anyway, I better get the kids to bed and I wish all my friends a Happy New Year and I hope to see you all then!

We Survived!!!

What a crazy week it's been. And I'm not even talking about the weather here in "sunny" Florida. It's 61 degrees outside right now! The kids haven't even been out a full week yet and I'm already counting down the days until they go back. All the moms can probably agree with me there! Plus, being broke after the holidays completely stinks because I can't take them anywhere to get us all out of the house. GRrRrR!

Other than that small issue it has been an okay week with Christmas and all. It was lean here at the house, but no one really complained because grandma went all out and made up for it! The kids got Build-a-Bears, a few different board games, clothes, legos and barbies. I got a really pretty bracelet that has glass beads on it and my name in blocks. Mike got his usual bathroom reader and was happy for that. We all got tons of gift cards to toy stores and Wal-Mart. Looks like we'll have grocery money after all, hehe.

You know you love our Florida fireplace!!

Oh, I was going through some of the old files on my computer and came across an old Word document about how to save money. Well with five people on one income I thought this would be something worth reading. It had some pretty cool ideas. And of course it had some that I don't think would work for our family at all. Anyhoo, I thought I would start this week and try to take this through the new year. Maybe some of these suggestions will work for you. Or if you have ideas about them leave a comment below and share your opinion.

     1. Pay attention to where your money is going. Carry a little memo pad around and keep track of everything you spend. Like magic, the simple act of writing stuff down will actually help you to not spend. It also helps you to look at where your money is going and allows you to make informed decisions about how much to spend to live the life you really want to.

     2. Make a simple spending plan. You wouldn't think of setting off on a long trip without a map would you? A spending plan is simply a map to help guide you to where you want to go financially. It allows you to set goals and evaluate your progress. There's no successful company that doesn't plan their cash outlays. Why don't you?

Good Intentions

I really gotta get better at keeping up with my blog.  It's not that I forget to sit down and type out stuff either.  I am constantly thinking about thinks to write about about how I would word it when I did finally sit down.  I guess I keep myself so busy that when I do get slowed down a bit I completely shut down and just veg out or something.  Well, here I am and I may even make myself a calendar so I have to sit down a few times a week and pound something out on here.

Now that we finally moved I need to get back into my couponing and try to save us some money.  I may even try to make some money if I can keep up with the blogging.  I went to Publix this morning before church to get my four newspapers.  Luckily the cashier knew exactly why I was doing it and quickly informed me that there were no inserts this week.  Talk about wasting money while trying to save it!  I felt kinda dumb and blessed at the same time if you can follow that train of thought.  Anyway, when I got home I quickly jumped onto my favorite couponing site and checked out the "insert calendar".  Sure enough there were no inserts today or next Sunday for that matter.  For those who need to see it in black and white here is the site I use http://truecouponing.com/2012-coupon-insert-schedule/ .  She should be posting the new 2013 yearly schedule very soon.  I really like this site since it's so easy to navigate and she has really good Christian values about no being greedy and giving back to the community.

Well, I think that's about all I post about for today.  I need to get some laundry down and unpack a few more boxes if I can before I start dinner.  A mom's work is never done...especially with 3 kids!!

Flower Petals

OK...so it's been a few days...it's been crazy around here.  We had successful meetings this week with both Girls Scouts and Cub Scouts.  With my Daisy Scouts we made planters out of recycled 2L bottles.  They liked it so much I decided to do the same thing with my sisters group on Thursday during Cub Scouts.

It's actually a pretty easy thing to make.  I first made one at home to exactly how the steps went and to make sure it was kid friendly.  Both groups of girls loved getting in and getting their hands dirty and planting the seeds.  We made three of these with Daisy seeds on Tuesday, but on Thursday I had several different types of seeds to choose from.  I made one using Red Sunflower seeds.  I think Samie picked a Morning Glory color mix.  That is going to be so pretty when it starts to bloom.  The one I made at home I used this yellow Marigold plant I bought at Wal-Mart for less than a dollar.

I also used less soil in the one that I let the girls make.  On mine the soil compacted an inch or so in the first few watering's.  It's quite funny walking up to our front door and seeing 6 2L bottles all in some stage of planting.  I had to bring the Girl Scout ones back home since there was no real safe place to leave them at our meeting place.  I wanted to leave them on the window sill, but it was sloped.  I just pray they grow well enough so the girls don't think I killed their plants.  That would not be good at all!

By the way guys...if you guys are actually reading these just leave a quick comment to let me know.  I'll try and keep this up as long as  keep getting views.

And the Winner Goes to......

No, I'm really not into award shows and what not, but I do have the best hubby around! Why you ask? Well let me tell you why my friends! A few of you know he gave me a HP Tablet for Christmas.  I loved being able to get a few HP apps. that helped me be more portable at Church and stuff.  BUT, what you k=may not know is that my oldest son, Stephen, recently moved back in with us.  You also may not know that Mike was promoted to Ops. Manager at work around that same time.  Well, for being 18 it was had to believe what little he had at his father's house as far as tech stuff.  So, my hubby, always thinking of others, thought he'd put a plan in motion.  We all loaded up in the Tribute and headed to Staples for school supplies.  Mike had some "things to take care of" while we were there.  While the kids and I put all the binders, backpacks, pencils and about 50 other things in the back of the vehicle he came out holding a box saying it was "research for work."  Well given the recent promotion I figured it was exactly that...more paperwork to study.
When we got home he pulled the new Google Nexus out and said he only had a few days, but he needed to figure out some of the features so he could sell it at work.  He plugged it in to let it charge.  It had to charge overnight and he told me I could play with it so I could give him feedback about it too.  Fast forward 8hrs and he came home from work and asked me what I thought.  I went on and on how much lighter it was from the HP and how it was more user friendly with it being Android compatible.  He listened intently and then answered, "Good, because it's yours."  He had planned on giving it to me as an upgrade and then giving the HP to Stephen to use for school stuff.  And to top it off he got me a purple case for it.  HE ROCKS!!!

On anther note....I went to Winn Dixie the other night for a serious grocery shopping trip. I didn't take the kids so it was that much easier. I love that they want to go with me and "help", but sometimes it actually slows the process a bit. This ended up being a bigger haul than expected, but it was a good trip for sure. I'm not going to list all I bought as I don't want to bore you to tears. I did get 9 boxes of Pop-Tarts, 6 Hamburger Helpers, 8 Pork Chops, 12 Country Style Ribs, 2 boxes of pasta, several cans of chili...the list goes on and on. The cashier knew I wanted to ring the total sale so I could get a before and after total. So here we go...my before tax and discounts total was $198.40 after my rewards card the total got down to $139.61 and we're not done there. I then handed her another $22.69 in coupons which brought my total all the way down to $106.73! That's a savings of $90.82! Not quite cutting my grocery trip in half, but it was close enough for me to get excited over.

I got a really cool 3" binder at Big Lots for $14. I thought I'd show you guys real quick how I arrange it.

Of course it's purple! You guys doubted me? Anyway, I have alphabetical tabs and the basic baseball card type pages. I like this way becasue I know where all of a certain brand may be. K would anything Kraft...A would be for Advil or Arm & Hammer. That way in the store if I see a sale on an item I don't have to think about what catagory I listed it under...I know it's by brand and flip right to that letter. I did carry my binder with me to WD the other night and it was awesome. I actually used a few more coupons that I had originally planned because I has missed them in the flyer. Also I knew a few items I wanted weren't on sale, but the coupon expired soon. I checked the regualr price and decided that with the coupon I would be happy with the final price. I also was able to hand out a few coupons to some people who I knew I had a coupon for what they hand in their carts. I may not be able to hand out hard cash, but I can help them save some of their own.

Here's my binder open to a page. I still have to fold some of the bigger ones in half, but I don't mind doing that. If you don't want to that's okay. There are 4x6 pages (for photos) you can buy pretty easy too.You would just have more pages than me. I get 9 to a page where you would get 4 is all.

Hope you guys had a great weekend and I missed seeing some of you guys in church yesterday. Now to go spend time with my awesome hubby!

And it starts....

Scout Season that is.  Yep, Samie and Alex are back to their busy time of year.  Not only are we dealing with school events and homework for them, they also have scout nights now too.  Samie has had a couple of meetings already and is loving it!  She has a few girls in Daisy's this year from her school.  One was in her class last year and one from this year.  She is already having a blast.  It's so much more fun having all the girls (we have 6, maybe 7) this year, not that only having Samie as a Daisy wasn't fun last year.  It's just easy to do things with more girls...if that makes sense.

And now tonight is Alex's first Cub Scout meeting as a Bear Den member.  I wish I'd know he could join earlier since he missed Tigers and went right in as a Wolf.  He still had fun and earned a ton of belt loops last year.  He's already talking about what he wants to do this year to earn loops.  It's so funny hearing him talk about what his plans are and stuff.  Plus, seeing him interact with his fellow Cubbies is priceless!

To add to all those meetings, the Cub Scout Troop leader wants to help out with a weekly craft to keep the girls (usually sisters) busy during the meeting so the won't go and bother the boys for the hour.  It seems like it's going to be a bit of fun too.  I think the second meeting we will be turning 2L bottles into planters.  That way we can reuse it and turn it into something they can keep reusing too.

Did I forget to mention that we have a high schooler and all the stuff that comes with a senior, football games on Friday nights...Mike and I are still full time students...he's working 45+ hours a week...church on Sundays....and I'm sure I forgot about 20 other things we have to do in a week!

I forgot what my bed looks like...seriously.  As soon as I lay down I'm out for the night!

Taco Pie

This is a real quick and simple meal. You can spice it up anyway you want.

Ingredients:
1lb - Hamburger
1packet - Ta
co Seasonings
1/4C - Water
2 - Eggs
1/2C - Bisquick
1 1/2C - Milk
1 1/2C - Shredded Cheese
Sour Cream for topping

I start with browning the hamburger and draining it. I put in back in the pan and add the taco seasonings and 1/4 water. I bring it back to a simmer stirring it until most of the water is cooked in or evaporated. I then pour it into a 9" pie plate.

I then take the milk, eggs, and Bisquick and mix it in a small dish. I use a 2C measuring glass cup so I can measure and pour right from it. It saves on dishes too! Once this is mixed well I slowly pour it onto and into the taco hamburger. Then I sprinkle on bout 3/4C of the shredded cheese.

I then place it into a 400 degree oven for about 25 to 30 minutes. Basically until it's cooked all the way through and a knife placed into the middle of the pie comes out clean.

I usually let it set for another 5 minutes or so. It makes it a bit easier to eat and not so much like putting hot lava in your mouth. I then cut it like I would any other pie and place in the bowls. I top with a dollop of sour cream and sprinkle with a bit more shredded cheese.

We all love this dinner and it is so easy. You could even add salsa or a bit of hot sauce to the mix before baking to kick it up a bit in heat. Since I'm pretty much the only one in my house that likes salsa, I add mine to the topping along with the sour cream and cheese.

Just a Note

Nothing much going on today.  I got my nails done yesterday.  I really like them shorter and they were getting way too long to be able to do anything.  Plus, they were starting to chip at the tips because I kept hitting them on stuff.  The color is called Grape Juice by China Glaze.

Yeah, I know hold my fingers at such a weird angle looks, well....weird.  But it's the best way to show you all the color.

Also, little Miss Samie got her hair done today.  She got it washed really well and a deep conditioning treatment.  Let's hope the knots stay at bay for ore that a few days.  Brushing her hair is pure torture for the entire house.

And one more thing.  For those who saw on Facebook the question about trying to get some pictures and at one point ANY picture to load onto here...I figured it out, I think.  I actually had to go into the HTML writing option and load the picture that way.  It's kind of a pain, but at least it works.  I was ready to punch my monitor with it telling me there was an error with my pictures doing it the other way.  I guess I'll have to stick with whatever works at this point.  I am not going to restart my blog again now.

Chili Cheese Dog Casserole

I think I'm going to start adding quick easy recipes to my blog. I know as a mom you seem to get in rutts when it comes to dinners. Maybe some of these ideas may help. This is the first recipe I am adding and I hope to get more posted as I cook or bake them.

Ingredients:
10 - 8" Flour tortillas
10 - Hot Dogs
2 - Cans Chili w/ Beans
1C - Shredded Cheese (your choice of favorite)

I typically use a standard 8"x8" glass dish for this one. I start by spreading 1 can of the chili in the dish.

This is the step where kids come in and love to help me. I take the hot dogs and tightly wrap them in the tortillas. I tear off any over hang of the tortilla if there is any. I also have to cut one of the wraps in half so I can fill the whole dish.

I then cover with the other can of chili and sprinkle on the shredded cheese. We love cheese in our house so I spare no stinginess here. I guess you could also use hot sauce if you wanted to add a bit of kick too. I use a cheddar and monterrey mix for this dinner.

I typically bake it for about 25 - 30 minutes at 400 degrees. I test the heat by sticking a butter knife into the dish and placing it on my lips. (I know...so professional.) If the knife is hot then I know it's heated all the way through. Nothing worse than a cold chili cheese dog.

And viola'...a quick yummy meal the kids will love. And it didn't take slaving over a stove for an hour. Like who has that time? I hope you guys at least try it once. You can switch up anyway you need to fit into your dietary needs too. I bet pepper jack cheese would be awesome!! (hmm...note to self...)

Not a Coupon Queen!!

OK...I have had people ask me how I can save $100 grocery shopping. It's easy when you have your stuff together and organized. Yes, the only place in my house even slightly organized is my coupons. Let the laughing commence! Now that you're done laughing let me go on. I have a plastic box that has rails on the sides for hanging file folders. I get the Smeed Tuff ones since I take them in and out of the box A LOT!
I have them labeled according to the Sunday they came out. The printables are the one I pre-printed online at the various sites. The notes is my extra date stickers and just stuff like that. I rarely even look at the coupons I get. I just take them out of the paper and place them right into their folders. When I'm ready to go shopping I go to my favorite site www.truecouponing.com and select which store I'm going to. I check off the items I want and print my list. I go to my box and match up the coupons I have and decide how many of what items I am going to buy. I also add things to my list that may have not been printed out, like milk, lifesavers, or eggs.

I then head to the store and get my shopping fix on. I tend to let the cashier ring up all my groceries just so I can see and sometimes I even write down my "grand total" then, if that store has one, I have them swipe my club card. I love watching all the minus signs, hehe. I check the new lower grand total. Then I hand them the coupons. More minus signs!!! It's fun and at first you won't have that many coupons, but as you get those papers and save them, you will see that stack of coupons you hand over get bigger and bigger and you will see more and more minus signs!
